Managing Self-Esteem

Feeling depressed, deflated or defeated as a result of low self-esteem can quickly lead to poor life choices. Accepting bad behaviour in a partner or friend, poor choices at work or at school.

Self-esteem issues can lead to isolation and withdrawal, poor performance at work or school and can also lead on to anxiety and depression if not effectively treated.

Importantly though, just as low self-esteem can cause these and many other problems, very high self-esteem can also create difficulties in making connections with people and distorting our ability to learn from others.

Symptoms of Low Self-Esteem

Some of the main physical symptoms of anxiety can include:

  • Feeling hurt or overly sensitive to criticism
  • Sense of worthlessness
  • Feeling of being victimised
  • Being poorly treated by friends and partner

Counselling and Therapeutic Approach

Learning to reframe how we interact with negative thoughts and feelings can pave the way for a healthy level of self-esteem. A mindfulness-based approach as well as CBT type techniques could be beneficial as well. When you come to Eucalyptus Psychology, you will work with your psychologist to plan the most effective treatment method for you.
