What is a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed specialist training in mental health. As medical practitioners, psychiatrists can assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions — including prescribing medication where appropriate. They are trained in both the biological and psychosocial aspects of mental illness.
How is a psychiatrist different from a psychologist?
Psychologists are trained in psychological assessment and therapy. They work with thoughts, feelings, and behaviour using evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and often manage more complex or treatment-resistant presentations. The two professions work best in collaboration, which is why having psychologists and a psychiatrist in the same location can be genuinely valuable for patients.
When might I see a psychiatrist?
You might benefit from seeing a psychiatrist if you are experiencing complex or difficult-to-treat mental health challenges, if medication may be part of your care, if you need a specialist assessment or second opinion, or if you are working with a psychologist and your team feels that psychiatric input would be helpful. Your GP can refer you directly.
Collaboration between practitioners
One advantage of psychologists and a psychiatrist consulting from the same location is that, with your consent, your practitioners can communicate directly with each other about your care. Whether and how this happens is a matter for the practitioners involved, based on what’s clinically helpful in your situation.
Referrals and Medicare
To access Medicare rebates for psychiatric consultations, you will need a referral from your GP or another specialist. Unlike psychology sessions under Better Access, there is no cap on the number of Medicare-rebated psychiatric consultations. Rebates are available for as long as your care continues and a valid referral is in place. Referrals can be sent to reception@eucalyptuspsychology.com.au.
