What is telehealth?

Telehealth (or teletherapy) in psychology is used to refer to counselling that is conducted over the phone or via an online video platform such as Zoom, Skype or Coviu. It can be a great way to overcome the hurdles in connecting with your psychologist including distance, time limitations, availability or illnesses.

Who is telehealth for?

While telehealth is suitable for anyone who wants to access remote therapy, we find that it is especially helpful for people who are:

  • unwell or sick, or isolating due to COVID-19
  • residing in regional areas
  • professionals with busy schedules
  • parents of young children
  • unable (or find it difficult) to travel to our clinic
  • unable to find suitable psychologists near them.

How does telehealth work?

Telehealth sessions are 50-minute private, confidential sessions with a qualified psychologist, conducted online or via phone. If you book a video consultation, you will receive an email with the instructions to join the session. For phone sessions, your psychologist will call your phone from a private number at the time of your appointment.

Is telehealth effective?

Research shows that telepsychology is just as effective as face-to-face psychotherapy for a variety of mental health difficulties, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, post traumatic stress, addiction, and eating disorders. These findings extend across age groups and cultural groups. Importantly, clients report comparable satisfaction and therapeutic alliance for telepsychology and in person consultations. Furthermore, some clients find online settings less intimidating and prefer the additional personal space and control it provides.

Are Medicare rebates available for telehealth?

Rebates are available for telehealth sessions. If you have a GP referral or a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) our team will be able to assist with processing your rebate.

What do I need for telehealth sessions?

For a phone appointment, all you need is a phone that your psychologist can call. For a video consultation, you will need a device with a reliable internet connection, camera and microphone.

Having a private space for you to speak freely and without interruption in is also encouraged.
